About the Artist

Kristine Cameron
Artist/Tutor

I was born in Hamilton Victoria, in the year of the ‘chiko roll’ 1955.After a rather boring and innocuous beginning, I attended the local Presbyterian College from Kindergarten to Matriculation (the last year it was named as such) at the age of 17 years in 1972.

The dust hadn’t settled when I left for Geelong in 1973 to complete my Bachelor of Arts. This I completed in 1977, later in the same year I married.

I was employed in a variety of jobs….Research assistant for Community Chest(a fund raising organisation)Driving Instructor, Librarian are a few.

I   re-enrolled in University three years later to converge my arts degree into a fine art degree as well! At the completion of my first year I became pregnant. ….8 months

Later I gave birth to twins sons. Needless to say my further education came to a screaming holt!

In 1982 I moved to the Sunshine Coast with my husband and sons. In1985 I gave to my daughter.

In the early nineties my marriage came to screeching holt and started on the long and arduous task of rearing my children alone.

Along with the responsibilities of rearing my three children, I became involved in their education at pre- school level, as President of the Peregian Beach Kindergarten and Pre-School (1985&1986) and later at primary level.

As a professional artist I found a lack of creative and basic drawing in the general education. (Drawing is as instinctive to the mind as speaking) …… I spent voluntary afternoons in the Art room of their schools. This eventually led to teaching on a private level in my own studio.

I encourage the children’s visual creativity, because this seems a quality not sufficiently dealt with in our lives. My adult classes are approached with a similar concept but in a more complex manner. Most people have to be retaught to ‘see again’; because they are visually illiterate…they look at things in a very mundane survival level.

Along with my classes at my studio, I have previously worked at Art Base Studios in Tewantin, with Peter Hales for two years, teaching children and adults. This studio also exhibited and sold my art work.

Following this I set up an Art and Craft Studio in the Peregian Beach Shopping Centre. This outlet introduced me to many other facets of the community in their pursuit of recreational arts. I became a member of the Aqueous Arts Festival in Noosa, and organised ‘Kidz Artz Day’. This day was presented as hands on workshop day solely for the children to come and pursue their art interests of the day. Their work was presented in the form of a large mural; each individual art piece was stapled together and mounted on a wall, giving the impression of a very large bedspread. All primary school students in the Noosa shire participated.

I have worked for the Cooloola Sunshine Institute of TAFE as a tutor in art, painting and drawing, in adult education. I was employed with the Department of Education at the Pacific Paradise State School as a specialist Art teacher with the SPSS program.

I have designed and implemented art programs for early childhood, primary age, tertiary level studies and adults up to the age of 80 years.

I have designed short art courses for the following organisations:-

Noosa Art and Craft Association,
Cooloola Adult and Community EducationTAFE
Early Childhood Studies (Gympie CSIT)
Private tuition in my studio.

All the above programs are designed for the individual student to follow their own personal ideas and concepts. Individual responses and pace are an intrinsic part of the programs.

At present I teach and paint at my studio at home.
